Beachwood's Fire Firehouse
Spithead Street & Lookout Street
The Beachwood Fire Department's First Firehouse was located in the Borough Garage at the intersection of Spithead and Lookout Streets. Today the tennis courts and baseball fields of Mayo Park are located their. The hand pulled fire apparatus purchased by the Borough Property Owners Association prior to the establishment of the fire department had been stored there. The fire department was formed on June 23, 1922 and operated out of the garage, now called "the firehouse". The fire apparatus and gear was stored there and it was equipped with a fire siren in the fall of 1922. Fire Department meetings were held in Borough Hall. In colder months, to prevent freezing of the equipment, the fire apparatus was moved to the Beachwood Garage owned by Frank W. Goodrich, who was also a member of the fire company.
At the end of 1922 and into 1923, the Fire Department purchased 6 lots from the Mayo Estate for the purpose of building a fire station. Those lots were located on Atlantic City Boulevard. It was later decided that the Borough would assist in the building of the new firehouse to include a new Borough Hall on the second floor. The Borough reimbursed the fire department for their expenses and built the new complex which was completed in 1923. The fire department continued to use the Original Firehouse on Spithead Street until 1925.
